BIGGER RED ALERT lol! Awesome new project detected! You guys probably saw my recent post discovering another long lost Starflight fan game called Outerspace. Turns out the creator Gregg stopped working on that project to do something even freakier! A 3D VR Starflight fan game experience called Exoplanet! Sadly I don't have a VR setup to test it but if any of you do then its on steam and free so please let us know what it's like! For the rest of us you can still check out his impressive videos on steam where he flies around space and walks on planets through forests, lakes and mountains scanning weird alien lifeforms.

March Video Update from Gregg!

New Features/Changes:
"Behold, Ship Configuration! Here's my favorite Starport department from Starflight redone in VR for Exoplanet.

Features include a dynamically rendered ship model with a shield shader and more. There's a serialized ship class, a bank class, inventory and stat classes and management, a save / load manager for state-full player data and a GUI I've written from scratch, sans the VR keyboard. There is lots of code implied from this short video that might go unnoticed. Lots of work, this."

Update details:
This is a very big update, and represents a lot of work for this solo developer.
I can see the light at the end of the tunnel for a proper tribute to my favorite game of all time, Starflight.

- SteamVR 2.0 input handing with Valve Index controller support
- Save/load game functionality
- Music
- Crew creation and customization, including multiple species
- Ship creation and customization
- A money and inventory system
- Map markers and objectives
- A messages and notification system
- A colony world recommendation system
(the only way to make money currently)
- Starport (Bank, Operations, Personnel, Crew Assignment, Ship Configuration, Trade Depot)
- Volumetric nebula
- Planet side ship rendering (really adds to the immersion)
- Enhanced planet metadata
- Various UI updates and fixes
- A new large menu system

Exoplanet has come a long way, and I'm very exited about today's update. It lays the groundwork for a full open world RPG. I'd say I'm about 80% done, overall. Unreleased work is a full event driven story. I have most of the tools to implement this in the engine, today. Once the story is done, a big update will drive it to completion. Exoplanet will always be free!

New Features/Changes (29/12/2019):
"Exoplanet Update: Combat module is done, Waypoint system has been improved, Engineering and ship damage/repair systems are functional, All alien ship models are chosen/rendered, I've set territories on the map and the encounter engine is working pretty well. Today, I'm prototyping the communications module, which is coming along quickly after all this work has warmed me up. I still have to write about this much original copy: http://www.starflt.com/tables/index.php ... ien-comms/ - to flesh out the plot. I expect a significant update soon (1-ish weeks) with the communication module working. I fixed all manner of bugs as well, and improved the VR locomotion. From the past few days of work!

This update will not include any plot updates or spoilers, the coms engine will be stubbed out with simple dialog."

New Features/Changes (14/02/2020):
"I should be releasing an Exoplanet update this weekend. Performance improvements, the ability to issue distress calls (and be fined for it and and/or given 4.0CM of sympathy Endurium, classic..), 3D models for communication portraits, replacing a slew of the placeholder dialog, implementation of the relationship module (your hostile statements / combat will have consequences) and a handful of other small stuff I'm forgetting.
I have so, so much dialog to flesh out. If anyone is willing to help whip up plot, lore, etc.. Lemme know. I have a basic plotline that I can share on the top secret along with species profiles and other stuff."

"Some notes on my soon to be released Exoplanet update:
While Exoplanet is still very much a work in progress, I've enhanced some fundamental gameplay
stuff with this update. Alien dialog and plotline elemetns are still largely missing.

- Characters, animations and "comms windows" for each alien encounter.
- You can now issue a distress call (and get fined).
- Configuration options are now stored in save games.
- You can access operations from the captians menu.
- Communication dialog is saved in Operations.
- There's now notifications when you recieve a new message.
- New rocks! Really big rocks and cliffs.
- You can climb and teleport on top of rocks now.
- Refactored freemove for better planetside walking.
- You can harvest the husk of the ships you destroy for blood money.
- Performance enchancements.
- Larger terratory for the Veloxi.
- More dialog for the Hyghu.
- Fixed bug where snapturning alters your position.

I'll be publishing this in the next 24 hours, I told my self I would before I play Half Life: Alyx :slight_smile:
The dialog is still largely unwritten. If anyone would like to contribute to that, lemme know."

"So, I've done a lot of work on the Exoplanet in the past 2-3 weeks. Worked on the relations engine, your communication answers have consequences, did a bunch of stuff with coded waypoints in alien coms (the better your coms officer's training, the more accurately the waypoint is translated to your navigation database..) a bunch of other stuff that I honestly forget. oh, and last thing, planet side structures and artifacts. Here's a brief demo:"

I remember talking with Gregg about Outerspace! back when he started it, iirc it was around the same time I was working on the Stainless Starflight remake. Cool to see he has a new project going.
