Larger viewable area

Is there any way to expand the viewable play area or plans to do something with this?
Space combat (encounters) is very frustrating on account of not being able to see what I am shooting at or what is shooting at me. Attempts to get close enough to remedy this problem end in disaster. I hope this can be fixed as I enjoy the game but will not be playing much longer with this frustrating dynamic.
